With its origins dating back to the eighteenth century, the University of Porto is one of the largest institutions for education and scientific research in Portugal and one of the 100 best universities in Europe.

Over 31000 students, 2300 teachers and researchers and 1,600 non-teaching staff attend its 15 schools and 60 research units, distributed by three university centres located in the city of Porto.

With 14 faculties and a business school, the University of Porto provides an exceptional range of courses covering all levels of higher education and all the major areas of knowledge. Every year, about 3,700 international students from 146 different countries around the world attend the University of Porto. And if these 1,810 students come through international mobility programs, more than half of them (1,890) chose the University of Porto to take their full degree.

The University of Porto is the largest producer of Science in Portugal, accounting for over 23% of Portuguese scientific articles annually indexed in the ISI Web of Science.

In fact, some of the most productive and internationally recognized Portuguese Research and Development centres belong to the University of Porto. More than half of its 60 research units were classified as “Excellent” or “Very Good” by the latest international independent reviews.

In recent years, the University of Porto has focused on the economic valuation of its research activities through partnerships with some of the largest national companies that have already resulted in several innovations with proven success in domestic and international markets.

The innovation produced by the University has also led to the creation of over 120 national and international patents and many other companies. At the UPTEC alone (Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto) there are over a hundred start-ups incubated, responsible for creating 900 new skilled jobs.

For all this, the University of Porto is the Portuguese institution with the best classification in the major international rankings of Education and Scientific Research, consistently placing the University of Porto among the top 350 universities in the world.
