The ‘Instituto Superior Técnico’ (Higher Technical Institute)’s mission is to contribute to the development of society, promoting a quality higher education in Engineering, Architecture, Science and Technology, in the form of undergraduate, postgraduate and lifelong training courses, developing activities in Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I), essential to the progress of knowledge, and teach at the level of the highest international standards.
The Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) was established in 1911 as a result of the division of the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Lisbon. The first Director of IST (1911-1922) was engineer Alfredo Bensaúde who, in addition to promoting a profound renewal in the teaching methods of Engineering in Portugal, was also responsible for the creation of the first Engineering courses at IST: Mine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical-Industrial Engineering. Later, with Engineer Duarte Pacheco as Director of IST (1927-1932), the construction of the current campus of Alameda, Lisbon, was initiated. It is during this period that IST joins the Technical University of Lisbon (‘Universidade Técnica de Lisboa’). Over the following decade, the engineers trained at IST elevated their reputation as professionals with high technical competence, made obvious in the implementation of large engineering projects driven by Duarte Pacheco, then Minister of Public Works in Portugal.
Nowadays, IST is recognized nationally and internationally as a Great School of Engineering, Architecture, Science and Technology. It currently integrates the most prestigious laboratories and institutes of RD&I and transferal of existing technology in Portugal, whose international impact is evident in many areas of scientific research. The current training offer covers a wide range of 1st cycle courses, and also post-graduate training in Masters Courses and PhD programs.
IST is actively involved in several international networks and programs aimed at the mobility of its students, namely through undergraduate and graduate programs. IST currently offers more than 20 joint Master’s programs (Double Degree) with several international schools and participates in joint doctoral programs with MIT, CMU, UT-Austin and EPFL, also partnering with the European Institute of Technology.
